The Mustang Inn: Leadore’s Revitalized Hiker Haven
The Mustang Inn: Leadore’s Revitalized Hiker Haven
Nestled in the heart of Idaho’s rugged wilderness, Leadore is a charming small town that is well-known as a key stopover for hikers on the Continental Divide Trail (CDT). Approximately 13 miles from a trailhead at Bannock Pass, Leadore is ideally situated between two of the trail’s more challenging passes, making it a crucial respite for weary adventurers. The growing popularity of the trail and the increasing demand for services have led to exciting changes and improvements, particularly with the acquisition and revitalization of The Mustang Inn.
The Mustang Inn has long served as a pivotal hub for hikers seeking comfort, supplies, and a touch of local warmth. I recently got the chance to speak with the owner and operator, Mark Ulsh. Before moving to Leadore, Mark was an Army helicopter pilot raising his four boys alongside his wife in Pennsylvania. But after answering a call to new beginnings in the West, he and his family run the Mustang Inn together. It is with fondness that Mark speaks of the inn’s previous owner, Sam, a beloved local figure and quasi-trail legend known for his wood carving and philosophical porch chats. Sam’s inn was a cherished stop for hikers, providing a unique and homey atmosphere. In their two years of ownership, Mark and his family has focused on making positive changes to the business, while preserving the spirit and traditions Sam left behind.

When Mark and family took on the inn, it was right in the middle of the busy hiking season. Their first season was a whirlwind of learning and adaptation, but by the second year, they had found their stride. They’ve since remodeled, updated, and spruced up the landscape. Their efforts have been well-received by the hiking community, who appreciate the welcoming environment and the personal touch they bring to their hospitality.
The newly revamped inn operates like a hostel during hiking season, offering a blend of comfort and community. It features all the amenities hikers need: a common living room, dining area, kitchen, and the much sought-after massage chair. The space fosters a sense of camaraderie among guests, with a welcoming atmosphere reminiscent of the social hubs found on the Appalachian Trail or Pacific Crest Trail.
The Inn can accommodate up to 16 guests when full, with four private rooms available in a guest house behind the main building. This setup allows for a mix of private and shared accommodations, catering to a range of preferences. The Inn offers several amenities including breakfast, free laundry, mail service and holding, and connection to trail shuttles.
The Inn’s relationship with the hiking community is marked by mutual respect and appreciation. The owners use the FarOut app to communicate with hikers, providing updates on shuttle services, trail conditions, and town offerings. The seasonal influx of hikers—peaking from July 15 to August 22—brings a vibrant energy, with a distinct flow of northbound and southbound hikers contributing to the dynamic atmosphere.
While hikers remain a key focus, the Inn hopes to expand its appeal to area visitors of all stripes. They envision nearly year-round bookings by those visiting the valley to enjoy hunting, day hikes, side-by-side trails, or simply a scenic getaway in Leadore. As The Mustang Inn continues to evolve, it stands as a testament to the spirit of community and adventure, offering a welcoming haven for hikers and visitors alike while celebrating the unique charm of Leadore and the Continental Divide Trail.
