Steelhead: Fishing

/ Season: Spring/Fall

Our most exciting fishing is for steelhead. These 5- 15 pound fish have a life history similar to salmon, coming into the Salmon River from the Pacific in early fall. They over-winter and spawn in early spring. Some of these fish are “wild” fish, which must be released, but many are hatchery-raised, and can be kept.

Trout & Bass: Fishing

/ Season: Late Spring/Summer/Early Fall

On the Middle Fork of the Salmon, through the River of No Return Wilderness Area, fishing time is measured in days.  A typical float lasts six days.  We can provide a fishing focus and improve fly fishing success by using light, more manueverable, two-passenger McKenzie River drift boats or small inflatable boats. Since fishing boats leave camp as soon as breakfast is finished, instead of waiting for the camp crew to load, and stay out on the river until the camp crew has the camp set up, we also spend more hours on the river each day.

The Middle Fork of the Salmon River Idaho Fly fishing is a world-class experience! The cutthroat is surface-oriented, so this is dry fly fishing at its best, using the best flies for the Middle Fork of the Salmon River (Stimulators, Caddis, Hoppers, Parachute Adams, and others) supplied by Idaho River Adventures. Fly fishing the Salmon River from Idaho River Adventures rafts allows easy casts to hard to reach granite walls, mid-stream rocks, and back eddies that would otherwise be un-fishable. The fly fishing gets good in July and only improves as the season continues, with some amazing fishing in the late summer and fall. Our riverside chefs will dazzle you with gourmet, made-from-scratch meals prepared over an open fire and in Dutch ovens each night. There is no better place to experience a world-class Salmon River Idaho fly fishing experience than the Middle Fork and no better outfitter than Idaho River Adventures. Our Salmon River fly fishing trips include all the flies you’ll need, as well as camp gear, from sleeping bags, deluxe sleeping pads, and tents to tables and chairs.

Steelhead: Fishing

/ Season: March-Mid April and October-November

The spring season for steelhead is typically the month of March and first two weeks of April. Our weather and snow conditions are a huge factor in our spring run. Spring offers an exciting steelhead run. Large steelhead arrive here on the upper Salmon River, usually between Salmon and Challis areas, finishing their spawn run. The fall run is prime time for steelhead, water clarity and temperatures provide excellent opportunity for success. The fish are arriving fresh and moving slow as it is too early to spawn. As they wait for their eggs to mature they spend a lot of time resting in lay water. This is when the migrating fish are at their best and most susceptible to bite and fight the hardest!

Trout: Fishing

For our summer trout fishing trips which are also conducted on the Salmon River rainbow and cutthroat trout are the type of fish caught. The best time to fish for trout is after high water in early summer and then into fall after the water temperatures have cooled back down after the summer’s heat. Techniques for fishing consist of fly-fishing or spin casting. . The uniqueness of fishing the Salmon River is the scenery and excitement of a free flowing natural river, with its variation of birds and wildlife.

Salmon: Fishing

/ Season: Mid June-July

We offer Chinook salmon fishing trips and seasons are determined by fish counts. When numbers are healthy the season is usually set to start the end of June, but typically it doesn’t get underway until the first part of July. When numbers are low the Fish and Game Department does not open the season. We use similar methods for Salmon fishing as we do with our steelhead fishing, with the exception that the gear is heavier. Due to the warm water temperatures, we like to start very early in the morning, being on the river just before daybreak

We use Drift Boats and/or rafts depending on river conditions. These boats are set up to accommodate 1 or 2 anglers. The Salmon River has a healthy population of both Rainbow and Westslope Cutthroat Trout. The trout respond favorably to dry flies and that is our preferred technique. We often employ a small nymph, along with the dry fly and will use a nymph setup when conditions call for its use.

The amazing Steelhead are native Rainbow trout, which migrate to the ocean and return as adults to spawn. The fish run from 23” to well over 30”. While never easy to catch, they are a fish you will remember for a lifetime! We fish in the traditional style of swinging flies while wading. Early season we normally utilize floating lines and switch to sink-tips as the water cools. Spey rods are most often our weapon of choice and helping new Spey casters is one of our specialties.
